Meet Wei-Tai
My wife Violet and I moved to Lafayette 20 years ago to raise our two children, Shelley & Gareth, who loved their educational experiences attending K-12 at Happy Valley, Stanley, and Acalanes.
As parents, Violet and I have been deeply involved and met and befriended many other dedicated parents through parents’ clubs, Little League, Girl Scouts, Global Student Embassy, Boys Team Charity, MOL Football, orchestra and band, high school tennis and baseball, summer camps and so much more. Lafayette is an amazing and supportive community with a huge volunteer spirit, and we have enjoyed, benefitted from, and hopefully also contributed meaningfully to enhancing the vibrancy of the community and our schools over the years.
Prior to my City Council appointment in 2021, I served on the Lafayette Environmental Task Force and the Community Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Committee. I have also been a 4-year Board Member and past President of Sustainable Lafayette, where I had the opportunity to work on and lead numerous initiatives in support of the City’s Environmental Action Plan to drive water and energy conservation, reduce/ban single-use plastic bags/straws, reduce pollution/idling, opt-up to MCE Deep Green 100% renewable energy, promote Bay Area SunShares, recycling education and more. The City recognized my contributions in 2015 as an honoree of the Lafayette “Green Award” for Environmental Excellence.
Professionally, I have worked in solar and renewable energy since 2009 in roles ranging from head of global marketing at Suntech Power, at the time the world’s #1 solar company ($3 billion revenue), to Chief Operating Officer at Amber Kinetics, an early-stage energy storage venture with 70 staff. For 17 years prior, I was co-founder and CEO of my own business with 35 employees in San Francisco.
I am a graduate of Yale University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics & Political Science.
